ABOUT
This plan is about strengthening and intensifying development along a new proposed network. The Haarlemmermeer has a strategic geographic position with the gateway Schiphol in it’s center and a central position in between, and with direct connections to, major centralities in the Randstad. Schiphol is the biggest economic engine in the region - this indicates the amount of cooperation between big cities in the Randstad and Schiphol airport which are mostly knowledge and business based.
These regional qualities are creating a co-dependency in the regional scale which moves Haarlemmermeer forward to be realized as a metropolitan area. We think that the
“finger city” concept has reached it’s limits of growth. That’s why we propose a new network concept to
incorporate small cities in the region in the daily urban system of the city region.
We start off by connecting these smaller centralities to the bigger ones with a regional network. The new improved network would bring all the cities closer to each other which turns the finger city structure more to a network city structure. By bringing the cities closer to each other these
cities would meet or overlap, giving these areas and it’s inhabitants a new identity.
